Overcome writer’s block with these 3 tips & tools

Ugh. You know that feeling….

You sit down to write something. And the words are just.not.coming 😭😭😭

You stare at that blinking cursor and blank page, and they stare back at you… a little evil, almost like they are mocking you 😒

Sometimes it makes you want to throw your laptop at the wall, scrunch up your paper & call it a day….

… Writer’s block, eh? 🙄

It happens to everyone. Yep, even cool TV Copywriters like Mad Men’s Don Draper ☝️

It’s inevitable.

Why? Because we are not robots.

The thing is, even professional writers need thinking time, breathing space and a spark of inspiration. And so, I thought I’d share 3 quick tips for what I do to beat the block & get the words (eventually) flowing.

  1. Write literally anything 💭
Often, the hardest part about writing is just getting started. Or knowing what to write first. So, just write anything. You’ll be surprised how much easier it will seem once you’ve jotted down that first word or sentence.

  2. Create a structure 🗺️
Everything is easier to navigate when you have a map. And it’s no different when it comes to writing. Let’s say you want to write a blog post. Start with a rough outline of 2-3 key points, and then under each point, jot down 3- 5 bullet points of what you’d like to share about that point. Bit by bit, tackle each point, fleshing out your bullet points.

  3. Allow yourself to write freely (and badly)👀
At the top of your page, simply write: “This Is Trash That No One Will See”. And now, BAM! You’re free and can write anything you want without the pressure of perfection. Feels better already, right?
